The Alma Police Department revived its K-9 program in the Spring of 2012. The department received a donated K-9 from Mr. Michael Harper of Southern K-9 Kennels in Coffee County. The equipment for the K-9, Kennel, Vehicle Conversion, and upkeep of the dog are all paid for with seized drug funds. The department named our dog "Raider" after the local high school mascot.
Officer Nicole Smith is the department's K-9 Handler. Ofc. Smith and Raider received their training from South Georgia K-9 in Dooly County, Georgia. Ofc. Smith and Raider are certified in Narcotics Detection and Tracking by both South Georgia K-9 and The National Narcotic Detector Dog Association, Inc. (NNDDA)
The Alma Police Department K-9 Unit is proactive in the enforcement of drug crimes within the City of Alma and is also available to track wanted and missing persons if the need arises.
